Dem heute in London lebenden Künstler ist es 2014 gelungen, Bewohner Istanbuls vor die Kamera zu holen, deren Gesichter normalerweise nur arme Leute zu sehen bekommen. Ihr Tagesverdienst ist höchstens so gross, dass sie sich gerade ernähren können. Dazu kommt, dass ihr Berufsstand illegal ist. Deshalb werden sie von den Behörden gejagt und müssen blitzartig untertauchen können. So leben sie wie Geister unsichtbar in der Stadt, wie Gladiatoren unserer Zeit in ständiger Anspannung und Bedrohung. Vor Borlakovs Kamera aber treten sie plötzlich aus den verwinkelten Gassen, als wollten sie zeigen, dass sie existieren.

Bashir Borlakov, now working in London, has succeeded in bringing to public attention the faces of people usually seen only by the poor. Their daily earnings are at most barely enough to feed themselves. Because their professions are illegal, they are constantly being hunted by the authorities and at any moment must drop everything to hide. While they live like ghosts invisible in the city, on his camera Borlakov captures their existence as they suddenly step out onto little streets where they feel safe. Their wiry, athletic bodies make them look like contemporary gladiators, whose existence, both yesterday and today, is characterized by constant tension and consists solely of a struggle for survival.
